Description of Programme:

The Swiss ECLAM Training Programme is run by the three ECLAM Diplomates in Switzerland: Margarete Arras (see address above), Richard Weilenmann and Walter Zeller (Cantonal Veterinary Office, Basel). The training programme is supported by the Vetsuisse Faculty (Veterinary School of Switzerland).

The main locations of the training programme are the University of Zurich, ROCHE in Basel and the AO Research Institute in Davos. Training can also take place over a fixed period in other locations, e.g. MicroBios in Münchenstein, Switzerland and the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, Germany.

The training programme usually takes four years to complete and consists of basic and advanced training sections. The basic training section takes 30 months to complete and must be carried out in accordance with the specified training programme conditions. The 18 months' advanced training period can also be completed externally providing the conditions prescribed by ECLAM are fulfilled.

The coordination and supervision of the training programme is facilitated by a credit point system. In order to complete the training programme, a resident must earn a total of 80 credit points during the four years of training. Thirty of these points have to be obtained through practical work/supervised experience during the period of basic training. In the advanced training section the candidate has to obtain a further 25 credit points which focus on specialization and research work. The remaining 25 credit points have to be earned in the didactic portion of the programme.

Successful participation in the Swiss ECLAM Training Programme is achieved through both the attainment of the prescribed number of credit points as well as multiple examinations during the course of the didactic programme. In this manner, the condition in Article V. Section 1.c of the Requirements for Admission of the Constitution of the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (completion of at least 4 years' training and experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine) is fulfilled. Together with other preconditions, this is necessary for admission to the qualifying examination for active Diplomate status of the European College of Laboratory Animal Medicine.
